Chandigarh:Le Corbusier's dream overbridge in Sector 17

Master architect Le Corbusier's dream of having an overbridge in Sector 17 is finally set to come true.

One of the earliest structures planned by him, the final specifications of the project have been finalised and an attempt is being made to keep the original character. The overbridge would come up on the road dividing KC Theatre and Bank Square till the Chandigarh municipal corporation building.

According to the initial design of the project, the entire span of the overbridge would be around 850 feet, out of which the two inclining parts would be around 245 feet each. The length of the actual bridge has been fixed at 352 feet. The width of the bridge will be around 58 feet and it will have two underway roads for two-wheelers and rickshaws. Besides, according to the plan, the rest of the area will have showrooms for commercial activities.

The bridge was in the original concept of the city and area adjoining the road was considered a major focus area, shops were proposed to provide eating facility to the working class. Besides it, an 11-floor building was also there.
