Chandigarh New Delhi Expressway

In the next few years travelling between Chandigarh and Delhi is going to be more comfortable, hassle-free and less time consuming as the Centre is planning to come up with an expressway that would make the 250-km long journey faster and smoother.

At present, the existing national highway stretch remains choked at many places due to traffic congestion and commuters find the nearly five hours journey to be cumbersome.

The expressway, which allows unobstructed passage to vehicles at a maximum speed of 100 km per hour, will cut short the travel time to nearly half. Thousands of daily commuters use the road stretch, not only from Chandigarh, but also from Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir.

Apart from Delhi-Chandigarh, another expressway is being proposed between Delhi-Jaipur, which is of the same length.

Heavy traffic on the existing national highway results into a traffic jam-like situation at many places like Zirakpur, Ambala Cantt, Panipat and Murthal due to traffic congestion and it takes hours to pass through these areas.

Apart from this, long queues of vehicles at all three toll tax barriers at Lalru, Ambala and Karnal further add to the travelling hours. Fed up with frequent jams on the Chandigarh-Delhi road, most people prefer to take the train route.

The chief secretaries of Delhi, Rajasthan and Haryana will come on board with the centre, government will go ahead with the preparation of the detailed project report (DPR) of these twin expressways. These will be on new alignments meaning these would not pass through inhabited areas. Delaying the process would hamper the development of these two roads considering the hectic development in the entire NCR. The two expressways could start from a point which is at least 15km from the existing national highways.
