Mullanpur:Road widening stalled

Work on the proposed 200-foot wide road to Mullanpur, is facing the risk of being scrapped. The environmental clearance for construction of the road has attracted objections from Union ministry of environment and forests.Punjab government gave a premature go-ahead to the road widening project to a private real estate developer without taking mandatory clearances.

Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) had sought clearance two months ago. Without the ministry's approval, no work can be carried out.

The work was allocated to the private real estate firm in January. They started with what can be carried out before the environmental clearance. They did not begin any road widening however the union ministry had raised objections regarding the change in alignment of the existing road as certain areas falling on it were locked under the Punjab Land Preservation Act, 1900, and had been delisted late last year, even if a part of land has been delisted under the Act, permission has to be taken from the ministry regarding its use.
