GMADA has decided to set up an aerotropolis city near the airport for which around 800 acre has to be acquired. As many as 300 acre are needed for a road connecting international airport with Chhat village, near Zirakpur. But farmers’ opposition has delayed the project
The ‘Future City’ script for Mohali seems to be heading towards a rude intermission. The acquisition of land, which is a huge factor for
mega projects to roll out in the city, is giving sleepless night to authorities as neither the land pooling scheme nor cash compensation packages appear to have appeased the farmers. With the current state of affairs, experts say ambitious projects like aerotropolis, where massive chunk of land is required, are hanging in balance.
In a bid to popularize land pooling scheme among farmers, Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) had decided to to pay rent to farmers whose land would be acquired for different projects under the scheme. According to plan, the rent to be fixed on per acre basis by the collector was to be paid till the farmers were allotted developed plots.
The recent opposition of villagers to the acquisition of 58 acre for the dumping site has left officials worried as residents have threatened to launch an agitation if acquisition is not stopped. Similarly, residents of Mullanpur are opposing the acquisition of 450 acre for the urban estate approved by state government. The residents claim that most of the land is fertile and it would deprive them of their future source of income. They have demanded Rs 10 crore per acre compensation if the government goes ahead with the acquisition.
Acquisition of land for 200-foot-wide Kharar-Desumajra airport road is hanging fire for the last one year as the issue of cash compensation has reportedly not been decided. Baidwan said farmers should be given Rs 10 crore as compensation as land registry in Ballomajra village was already recorded for Rs 8 crore per acre.
