Delay in direct rail connectivity from Chandigarh to Ludhiana

The direct rail connectivity from Chandigarh to Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar, which was expected to be operational from December last year, has hit a roadblock.

The electrification of the Chandigarh-Morinda section is complete and awaiting commissioning by the CRS. As many as 33 new posts are to be sanctioned for maintenance of this section before it is commissioned by the CRS. This has been raised by the CRS office in his initial communication with the Electrical Engineering department undertaking the electrification project. As the section can be operational right on the day of the inspection and approval by the CRS, till the time these posts are sanctioned, the CRS would not inspect the site and thus delaying the commissioning.

Railway authorities are to expedite the construction work of new broad gauge railway line of the 52-km stretch between Morinda and Sahnewal for the completion of the Chandigarh-Ludhiana rail link at the earliest. The work of the Chandigarh-Morinda Section (46 km) under Phase-I was completed in 2006. The work on the Morinda-Sahnewal section (52 km) is in progress, but being executed at very slow pace, unlikely to be completed before December 2011.
